Why is there no gravity in space. In space gravitational forces do exist. There is no air in space. Orbiting just means that an object falls towards a planet due to gravity and continually misses it. On earth astronauts feel the force of gravity as weight because earth s surface prevents them from falling.
Space contains massive objects that exert a gravitational force on everything around them. Space has microgravity which is very weak gravitational force. Any object that has mass generates gravity and gravity causes every object to pull every other object towards it. The second reason that gravity is not so obvious in space is because objects tend to orbit planets instead of hitting them.
In outer space however there is no ground to push against astronauts. Towards the earth towards the sun and towards the galactic center. Astronauts only feel like there is no gravity because they are continuously falling as if there weren t. If you re in free fall you don t feel the gravity because everything around you is falling with you.
Imagine you have a piece of string with a ball on the end. There are two reasons that objects seem to be floating without gravity in space when they are really falling. Therefore if there is no air there is no gravity. It s an unusual feeling to imagine and something unfamiliar for us on earth unless you re a skydiver or an astronaut.
Each galaxy is held together by strong gravitational forces. This no air no gravity idea pops up all the time in movies incorrectly so. Because space is so large and planets are so small by comparison it s actually very hard to hit planets. Because gravity is everywhere in space objects in space are always falling.
Orbiting is what the earth does around the sun along with all of the other planets in our solar system.
