Deck Railing Spacing

The code has some very specific requirements for deck stairs.
Deck railing spacing. Install railings on any deck that is 30 inches or more from the surrounding surface and on at least one side of a stairway leading to the deck. If you aren t too picky then a 2 4 or 2 3 depending on the look you want will work for baluster spacing. Treads must be at least 10 inches deep measuring from front to back. However you can go higher for architectural or privacy needs.
The deck railings consist of 2 x 4 top and bottom rails attached to the back of the posts a 5 4 x 6 rail cap and 2 x 2 balusters. This is the simplest and most reliable way to space your balusters. Both should rest on the decking. Railings should always reach at least 36 inches high to meet code requirements.
The minimum height of the railing varies based on the height of the deck. Bolts should be vertically spaced no less than 5 1 8 inch apart. This will ensure that they are placed no more than 4 inches apart although spindles can be placed from the center point but not to exceed a 4 inch gap depending on the aesthetic you want to achieve. If you choose to install a guardrail on a deck lower than 30 you must still meet code requirements.
Decks attached to single family detached homes are regulated under the rules of the international residential code irc. Maximum spacing of posts is 72 inches on center. Once you know your baluster. Respect minimum height requirements.
Decks 24 to 5 10 180 cm need 36 guards and anything above 5 10 requires a 42 high railing. If you re installing something like a hot tub run them up to six feet high and install privacy fencing. To make sure your baluster spacing is up to code follow the best practice to include three balusters for every foot of railing. Stair rails on decks should be between 34 inches and 38 inches high measured vertically from the nose of the tread to the top of the rail.
Guards are required when then deck is 24 60 cm above grade. According to the international building code deck railing posts should be spaced no further than 6 feet apart. The top of the handrail should be at least 34 inches. Sometimes local building codes will have more stringent regulations so check your local building department for post spacing requirements.
